All through the great West, and from Oregon to Sonora, on the Pacific, these birds abound, and on the Pacific Slope they are a positive pest to the farmer; and even so near to us as the valley of the Ohio River, at a point which we, living in New York, may easily reach in twenty-four hours, these birds are netted in enormous quantities, and unlike any other game bird, they thrive in the presence of civilization; and, as I before remarked, were it not for the poacher and pothunter, we need never want a day's sport over our grain stubble from November to January.

Sportsmen living in the City of New York can, within one hour's travel on any railroad running north, south, east or west, get upon quail ground; but, as in the vicinity of the city land-owners are beguiling to preserve their game, one cannot well attempt to shoot without permission, and that permission may not be granted; therefore, any one who could spare the time had far better go further, with a certainty of sport as a reward for his trouble.
